Brief 4 - ISTD - Letterpress invites
Here are two of the inked plates, because the etch was not quite deep enough it is clear here that the ink has covered the full plate. apart from the area immediately around the etch. The image below shows the result of mounting the plate on the letterpress.
The next logical step was to hand roll the plates and mask the areas that should not be printed by cutting the positive used to create the plates and using them like a stencil.
For the A6 examples this was not particularly successful as the print quality was not strong enough and by the time I'd worked out the right amount of pressure and achieved a decent print, ink had built up on the corners of the mask and the pressure meant that these build ups printed. Also the space made by the counters printed the more times that the plate was inked up.
The A5 examples were much more effective due to the amount of detail being much less and the mask working better. There was still the same problem with build ups of ink in the corners of the mask, but the first few prints give a good enough print.
